Durham Public Schools -- Exceptional Children's Program

Durham Public Schools has a support system in place at every level to ensure that students who are exceptional have an opportunity to learn that is equal to that of other students. The proximity to some of the most well-respected health care systems in the state has attracted many EC parents and their students to the Durham area.  Some 4,000 of the 33,000 students in DPS are served by the Exceptional Children’s Program, making DPS one of the 10 largest EC programs in the state.

The North Carolina Assistive Technology Program (NCATP) is a state and federally funded program that provides assistive technology services statewide to people of all ages and abilities.

Assistive Technology (AT) is any type of equipment that helps people with disabilities or older individuals be more independent at home, school, work, leisure time, or in community life.

The North Carolina Early Intervention Branch (NCEI) is a part of the N.C. Division of Public Health. It is the lead agency for the N.C. Infant-Toddler Program (ITP). The Infant-Toddler Program provides supports and services for families and their children, birth to three who have special needs. Research shows that this time period is critical. It offers a window of opportunity to make a positive difference in how a child develops and learns. Eighteen Children's Developmental Services Agencies (CDSAs) across North Carolina work with local service providers to help families help their children succeed.

The Durham Center manages mental health, developmental disability and substance abuse services in Durham County. Although we do not actually provide services, our job is to ensure that local citizens who seek help receive the quality services and supports they are eligible for to help them achieve their goals and live as independently as possible. These services are delivered by a network of private providers who contract with The Durham Center.

Community Partnerships, Inc. is a contracted provider with the Durham Center.
